Richard Nagy Jr. Obituary

Richard G. Nagy, Jr., 72, of Carrington Park, Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away peacefully on November 02, 2020 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio due to complications from diabetes.  He was born on September 27, 1948 in Geneva, Ohio, the son of Richard G. Sr. and Kathleen (Hall) Nagy.

Rick graduated from Edgewood Senior High School in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1967.  He joined the United States Army in 1968 becoming a Chief Warrant Officer.  He piloted the Huey Helicopter an and spent one year of his active duty in Vietnam.  After being honorably discharged, he missed flying so much that he joined the Ohio National Guard a few months later and ended up flying Huey helicopters for another 30 years, retiring in his early 50’s.

On June 18, 1972 he married the former Linda E. Bolender.  They were married in the First Presbyterian Church on Park Avenue in Ashtabula, Ohio by the Reverend George Johnson.  They celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary this past June.

He spent his career in retail as a manager working for several companies.  He worked for Nichol’s Department Store in Ashtabula and after they closed, he went to work as a manager for Dollar General. He retired from the Dollar General in Ashtabula but almost immediately found a way to enjoy another one of his great passions……..trains.

Rick was a life member of the Lake Shore Live Steamers and was a LSLS volunteer for the Lake Metro Parks at Penitentiary Glen in Mentor.   He and the other club members made and laid track, worked on their trains and enjoyed their time spent together at their Blueberry Railroad in Geneva.  Rick truly loved his time there with his friends and the trains.

Besides his passion for helicopters and trains, he enjoyed doing many other things; among them were his love for hiking and camping.  He and his nephew, Sean, spent a lot of time walking trails; among them the North Country Trail in Pennsylvania where they enjoyed pitching their tent and canoeing on the river. He also loved animals (he and his wife had many over the years), enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and boating on Lake Erie.

He is survived by his wife: Linda; his sister: Barbara (Larry) Balzer; his brothers: Donald (Donna) Nagy and Steven Nagy; brother and sister-in-law’s: Gary (Robin) Bolender and John (Carly) Bolender; a special niece and nephew: Jennifer Armstrong and Sean Bolender; plus a number of other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James and his wife Agnes and his in-laws Clarence and Evalyn Bolender.
